Since its establishment on August 14, 1941, HHA has served as a cornerstone of Huntsville’s growth. The Authority has evolved from addressing a critical wartime housing shortage into a leading force for affordable housing, community development, and neighborhood revitalization.
The anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on HHA’s history and its continued impact on the Huntsville community. From its first project at Redstone Park to the iconic Johnson and Drake Towers, HHA has continued to adapt alongside a city that grew from a “sleepy cotton capital” into the “Space Capital of the World.”
“We are honored to celebrate 85 years of service to the Huntsville community,” said Antonio McGinnis, Executive Director of the Huntsville Housing Authority. “When we look back at our history, we see more than bricks and mortar; we see the foundation of the American Dream for thousands of families. Our legacy is defined by the resilience of our residents and our commitment to providing a hand up. As we celebrate this milestone, we are also focused on building the future of Huntsville.”
Throughout 2026, HHA will host commemorative events and a year-long social media campaign, “85 Years of Hope,” highlighting historical milestones and the people who have helped shape the Authority and the city it serves.
HHA also played a pivotal role in the “Heart of Huntsville” plan, which helped pave the way for significant community landmarks, including Big Spring Park and the Von Braun Center.
Today, HHA continues to advance its mission through modern management practices, sustainable building initiatives, and community-focused programs. Through efforts such as the “Life in the Bricks” podcast, HHA shares the authentic stories of residents, staff, and community partners while highlighting programs that promote opportunity and self-sufficiency.
We’re inviting our local business leaders and community partners to stand with us.
